Can you find the hidden hearts in these drawings?
Some are obvious, others not so much. Each of these Alpine flowers contains a hidden heart, which is one of the reasons I named this series "Alpine Love." Earlier this year, I was looking forward to spring and, as my mind often does, I was thinking of travel as well. I combined my love of wildflowers with my love of the Alps and created this set of five Alpine spring wildflowers. Each of these flowers is a symbol of love and filled with folklore.
To be transparent, I've never actually been to the Alps, but it is very much on the travel list. I hope a little of that magic comes through in the illustrations. Enjoy!
Edelweiss
Perhaps the most iconic of all Alpine flowers, the edelweiss blooms from rocky crevices high in the Alps. Its star-shaped cluster of woolly white flowers is a symbol of romance and love and has been woven into folklore for centuries. Stories tell of young men climbing dangerous mountain slopes to bring one back to the person they loved. My own love for this flower comes from The Sound of Music. From the song to its place as a symbol of Austrian heritage, this flower is so beautiful in so many ways. It is very much on my bucket list to see one in person one day!

Spring Gentian
The spring gentian is one of the first flowers to appear after the snow melts, and its blue color is unbelievable. It has long been connected to new beginnings and the kind of love that catches you off guard, like something suddenly blooming after a long, cold stretch. This flower is so unique I had to capture it and the heart at the bottom is the perfect touch.

Alpine Primrose
The Alpine primrose is the one I kept coming back to while designing this set. In the language of flowers, it stands for young love and tender beginnings. It often grows tucked into sheltered spots in the rock, which I think suits it perfectly. I especially like the twisted stems in this design and the character it adds to the piece.

Alpine Buttercup
The Alpine buttercup is a cheerful splash of gold and thrives in damp, rocky habitats near snowfields and glacial streams. Its glossy petals glow in mountain light, and it carries a quiet symbolism of joy found in unexpected places. I enjoy the overall balance of the three flowers and the falling foliage.

Mountain Harebell
I love the harebell because it is one of the most fragile flowers but it grows in some of the windiest, most exposed spots in the Alps. Its nodding, violet-blue bells catch the mountain breeze like tiny wind chimes. It symbolized constancy and loyalty in Scottish and Nordic folklore for a long time and it carries the idea that love stays true even in hard conditions.
